Recordings In Progress - First Cuts

I'm working on some recordings while in Paris. At the bottom of my "Music" page is the absolute first cut of a take of "Frankie and Johnny" during our first rehearsal, just Pierre and me, in the living room of the apartment where I'm staying. I grew up singing a lot of Blues with my dad from a very early age, and it's great fun to go back to those roots with these wonderful musicians. Tomorrow we'll record with bass, mando, and another guitar.

September in Paris

I am having an absolutely superb time in Paris, thanks to my very dear friends, both musicians and music lovers. Live music is alive and well here in the forms of jams, the club scene, and concerts. It's really wonderful. I'm very excited to be able to record with some fantastic musicians. I have another week here, and then back to the Bay Area and a short trip to LA for a very busy late autumn and winter.

Heading into Autumn

I've had a really wonderful summer, playing about 40 events a month and having a blast. I have amazing band mates and have been working many solo shows as well. I'm very much looking forward to returning to France at the beginning of September. I'll be in Paris for several weeks, and then return for a very busy autumn here. I'll be doing lots of live events and also recording.

I'm back in California, where I've been touring regionally and playing a lot of local gigs. I'm playing in three duos and a new quartet right now, and doing a lot of solo work as well.

Keeping this music flowing is fantastic, and I think always of those who came before us to create Jazz and Blues, and what they went through so that we can have what we have now with these amazing forms of music. I am grateful.

I'm going back to France in September for almost 3 weeks, and am very much looking forward to it.

In France February 12 - 23rd

I am back in France now, after far too long. It's fantastic to be back, walking this beautiful city of Paris, seeing old friends, eating crepes from crepe stands, speaking the language, and remembering the wonderful times I had when I lived here. Today I went to a jam session with some of the nicest people ever. They played American music with such heart that I couldn't believe my ears. I also got to borrow a gorgeous bass from one of the excellent bassists.

I'll be in Paris a few more days, and then off to Eastern France to visit some of my dearest friends. I can't wait to see them again.

I have a run of something like 6 gigs in a row the day after I return, and about 25 in March, so things are very busy in a wonderful way.

Back Home

I've been touring a lot with my kids' music and am back home now. The touring went extremely well, and I met so many nice people!

I just got home from playing a costume ball with Big Roy's Band, a very fun Jazz quartet led by Roy Henderson, a New Orleans native - and you sure can tell by the way he plays. We always have a lot of fun on these gigs and play so many of my favorite tunes. Locking in rhythmically with drummer Billy Williams is so easy because he's such a good drummer and he knows the music inside out.

One lady came dressed as a teapot! She had to negotiate around the ball all evening with her spout and handle sticking out, and she did it very well!

I'll be touring this year with my kids' Jazz-, Blues-, and World-based solo act, and have just recorded my first solo CD. I'm playing now in both Southern and Northern California, and will be off to the Pacific Northwest and Alaska in June and the Midwest in May and August. Lots going on, and life is very full of music.
